AFI – Miss Murder

Wednesday, June 14th, 2006

Released: June 12th 2006

Released: June 12th 2006

Catchy, extremely catchy! Maybe the impression that AFI give off to those unfamiliar with the band doesn’t peg them as pop superstars, but this track pops all right!

‘Miss Murder’ may be one of the more accessible tracks, light on throat-wrenching screams, and heavy on a fast-paced melody, but it retains the general feel of it being AFI material. The lyrics in particular are telling – although it’s uncertain what they’re actually telling us. Vague and a little unsettling because of the vagueness, the track quickly goes from enjoyable to eerie. They perform admirably, treading the ambiguous line.

The Presets – Down Down Down

Tuesday, May 30th, 2006

Released: May 8th 2006

Released: May 8th 2006

The Presets are reminiscent of their label mates Cut Copy – with their techy gadgets and computer wizardry thumping and clicking away in the background and with their sometimes mild-voiced and sometimes scratchy, smoky vocals. On a closer listen, there appears more of an energy to it, it’s more violent and sleazy sounding.

Full of melodic acrobatics and a buzzing back beat, this is a sure dance hall track. Spiky in all the right places, this one takes a little getting used to, if you’re not a fan of the more techno side of dance. But it’ll hook you, all right.

Leon – Getting Into You

Tuesday, March 14th, 2006

Released: March 6th 2006

Released: March 6th 2006

Surprisingly enough, there is someone called Leon in Leon, and with the band releasing ‘Getting Into You’ on their own label – you’ve got to hand it to Leon. The person and the band.

The single is Summery, despite it not even being Spring properly yet. The bleep-bleep of some electronic device or other accompanies a tune that may be oversimplified, but since simplicity is one of the stated goals of the band, they’ve done a pretty good job. It’s quirky and although it loses some of the early momentum towards the end, there’s still a strange impulse to play it one more time ever so often.

White Rose Movement – Love Is A Number

Tuesday, July 26th, 2005

Released: July 4th 2005

Released: July 4th 2005

There’ve been quite a few bands that have taken the path to danceable rock – feel-good music that only requires scanty coordination and a bit of courage, perhaps. White Rose Movement happen to hail from London, and are named after the not-so-successful 1930′s German anti-fascist faction. It’s like an indie mix and match!

‘Love is a Number’ is not radically different from what’s already been offered by their predecessors, but it’s catchy enough to stand out. It’s the falsetto that seals the deal. Fast-paced, with appropriate pauses and somewhat unintelligible lyrics, it satisfies when you need to let loose.

Ladytron – Sugar

Saturday, July 16th, 2005

Released: June 20th 2005

Released: June 20th 2005

Here is where electro-pop lives up to its name, though it’s slightly more pop and a tad less electro – unlike selections from Ladytron‘s previous albums, such as ‘Light & Magic’. More alive and instrument-laden, ‘Sugar‘ is sure to set hips swiveling and head nodding coolly. And with lines like ‘If I give you sugar / will you give me / something elusive and temporary?‘, it carries a sharp edge while managing to show that the music is far from sexless.

‘Sugar’ has spawned more remixes than you can count on one hand, but to appreciate the tight production you need only to listen to the original.
