Updates: ARMS, Motel Motel, Noel Heroux & Paul Holmes

Friday, October 9th, 2009

Last Saturday, on a rainy afternoon, I and maybe 20 other people (tops) were at The Bell House in Brooklyn to take in the free “Good For You’s Good For Me” 1 year anniversary party featuring ARMS, Motel Motel, Bling Kong, and others. I didn’t stick around for too long as I was there to check out ARMS (read my interview with Todd Goldstein of ARMS here). It was a low key party all around.

Update: White Lies

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

I was thoroughly impressed by the extremely short set (due to singer Harry McVeigh having a cold) White Lies did in March while playing with Friendly Fires on the NME Tour (to refresh your memory, here’s the post about that show), so expectations were high for their headlining set at Webster Hall this past Friday.

They delivered beautifully. They played for an hour and Harry was obviously enjoying the crowd’s enthusiasm, amping it up with smiles and encouraging gestures of the hand.

Update: Fanfarlo, Wildbirds & Peacedrums

Saturday, September 26th, 2009

I heard good things about Fanfarlo from friends, so when they set a a date for my favorite venue (and Maximo Park cancelled their tour, but let’s not talk about that), I decided to check them out. They were upbeat, but ultimately, not something I’d go to see again.

Wildbirds & Peacedrums opened, the biggest impression I got from them was drums, lots of drums. They’re a drum band and not a guitar in sight.

Update: Little Boots, Yes Giantess, Plastiscines

Friday, September 18th, 2009

This was the third time I got to see Little Boots ( see previous accounts: Fader Fort CMJ 2008 photo gallery; (Le) Poisson Rouge May 2009 review and photo gallery) and each time is definitely as fun as the last.

Update: Wild Beasts

Wednesday, September 9th, 2009

I had the chance to see the first ever NYC show Wild Beasts performed yesterday at Joe’s Pub. Having never been to the space, I was surprised by just how much of a pub/restaurant it is. I think I ended up being seated in the “reserved” section on a very comfy couch. Let me tell you, after so many shows where I have to stand for hours, this was a very nice change.

The show was fairly low key (and the lights were appropriately terrible) as most people were taking advantage of the dinner menu. I quite enjoyed the latest album from the UK band and it translates well live. If you get a chance to see them, do it, they’re not as strange-sounding as the record seems to indicate.

Next up: A review + photo set of the Bowery Little Boots with Yes Giantess and Plasticines, if the guestlist comes through. And I did an interview with Todd Goldstein of Harlem Shakes about his solo project ARMS, so look out for that on Flavorwire.
