I covered this year’s CMJ for Flavorpill/Flavorwire and was given free reign as to which bands to see.
First up was the Terrorbird day showcase at Cake Shop featuring Silver Starling, ZAZA, Warpaint, Darlings, and Black Hollies (topping the day party with a very catchy set).

Next up were Freelance Whales, Findlay Brown (who was reminiscent of Elvis, albeit quieter), TigerCity, and the Postelles at Bowery Ballroom.

I’ve heard of both The Dodos and The Ruby Suns, but have never really given either a listen. When they announced a couple of dates in New York, I thought this would be a good time to check both of them out.
The Dodos were very drum heavy and sound better live than on record. Fact. Vibraphones are awesome and the drummer incorporated some heavy metal drumming techniques when he smashed his drum kit to bits at the end of the second encore. Hardcore.

New Zealanders The Ruby Suns had several very poppy, happy songs and great stage banter. A good tip on how to acquire a NZ accent: don’t move your tongue when you talk. At least that’s according to the band.

Last Saturday, on a rainy afternoon, I and maybe 20 other people (tops) were at The Bell House in Brooklyn to take in the free “Good For You’s Good For Me” 1 year anniversary party featuring ARMS, Motel Motel, Bling Kong, and others. I didn’t stick around for too long as I was there to check out ARMS (read my interview with Todd Goldstein of ARMS here). It was a low key party all around.

Exclusive Q&A: Todd Goldstein Is ARMS
Todd Goldstein of ARMS
Todd Goldstein, best known for his involvement with New York band Harlem Shakes (RIP), is a solo artist in his own right. Kids Aflame, ARMS’s debut album is finally getting its US release through Gigantic Music on October 27th. New Yorkers can preview the material this Saturday at the Bell House when he plays a free show with his new band; in the meantime, read what Todd has to say about his inspirations, the direction of the second album, and why ARMS and not legs.
Flavorpill: Where did the name for the solo project come from?
Todd Goldstein: Well, I started doing this five years ago. I started doing this new music that had a specific style and a certain feel. I had been doing very different stuff before that. So I was like, “This new thing needs a name.”
The story that I tell is there’s a British rapper called Ears and the idea of having a body part — sort of plural body part — as a name was something that just struck a chord, so I literally went through a bunch of different body parts. I was like “legs, hands, feet…” ARMS has a silly double entendre within it that I could live with. It didn’t hit me like a bolt from the blue, but I figured I could live with this name. I was thoroughly impressed by the extremely short set (due to singer Harry McVeigh having a cold) White Lies did in March while playing with Friendly Fires on the NME Tour (to refresh your memory, here’s the post about that show), so expectations were high for their headlining set at Webster Hall this past Friday.
They delivered beautifully. They played for an hour and Harry was obviously enjoying the crowd’s enthusiasm, amping it up with smiles and encouraging gestures of the hand.
